About Kaudulla National Park
Centering around an ancient 3rd-century irrigation reservoir, Kaudulla National Park is an expansive sanctuary situated roughly 25 to 30 minutes north of Habarana. The park forms a crucial protected wildlife corridor connecting surrounding natural reserves, creating a seasonal haven for wild Asian elephants as water levels shift across Sri Lanka's dry zone. Between August and December, the receding waters expose vast, lush grassland plains where herds numbering between 150 to over 200 elephants gather freely in broad daylight. Unlike denser jungle settings, the open lakebed allows visitors to observe these gentle giants grazing, bathing, and tending to their young calves against wide-open, unobstructed horizons.
