About Minneriya National Park
Located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province just minutes from Habarana, Minneriya National Park covers nearly 8,900 hectares of dry-mixed evergreen forest, scrublands, and open wetlands. Established as a national park in 1997, it serves as a critical conservation basin surrounding the historic Minneriya Reservoir (Minneriya Wewa)—an ancient irrigation reservoir constructed by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD.
The Great Elephant Gathering
-
A Global Wildlife Wonder: Minneriya is celebrated globally for hosting "The Gathering," recognized as one of the largest congregations of wild Asian elephants on Earth.
-
Dry Season Spectacle (July to October): As water dries up in nearby forests during the dry season, wild elephants migrate across regional jungle corridors toward the receding waters of Minneriya Tank.
-
Herds in Plain Sight: Visitors can see between 150 to over 300 elephants gathered together in open view across the lake bed—grazing on fresh shoots, drinking, bathing, and socializing with their young calves
